Well, I am just the Woodworker. I am a woodworker. I am a professional woodworker.
Are your clients the type of people who can relate to this? Most of my jobs are very personal and intimate. I spend my time on the woodshelves, and I don’t ever spend my time in a cubicle, so it would be very difficult for me to relate to a lot of my clients. My clients are more of people who have a sense of humor about wood as I am. I just like to go in and make things with my hands, like you described. It doesn’t matter what business they are in, they can relate to that.
What can you tell us about your workshop and the skills that you learn there?
I teach woodworking in my workshop. I have the tools and equipment, but I need the services of a professional to help me learn the techniques. Some customers have the budget. Some people would go, ‘oh, you’re going to pay me to learn how to do this, don’t worry about it,’ and I would think, ‘how could I learn for free if they’re paying you?’ The problem with woodworking is that you have to do it. You go in and you drill holes, and you see those little cracks, and you know something doesn’t look right, and you’ve got to fix those things.
When I teach, the first thing I tell people is that if they’re learning a technique, they don’t have to learn it the first time they come in. So I’ll offer tools. Then I’ll give a little lecture on it, and then I try the thing, until I think you’re prepared. I tell people that if you start to get comfortable doing something, it’s the best thing you can possibly do.
So what makes you think of working inside your own shop?
I do work for one of my clients, and she’s very hands-on, and she uses wood and she uses tools. She is a very hands-on person. So much so, that she likes to play with them. When I teach an exercise like the One Arm Bench, she’ll give me my tools, and I will teach her how to fix that thing so she can do it herself, and the people can see how much she’s invested in doing something and how much fun she has in it. That’s where my enthusiasm comes from.
