“You would be surprised — maybe even shocked — at how much more expensive the cheapest homes really are than the most expensive homes in America,” writes reporter Michael Schumacher.
“For example, the median asking price for 2-bedroom duplex apartments is $898,000, the most expensive home in the country. On the other hand, the lowest-priced, 2,500-square-foot home in Austin, Texas, is $385,000.”

We selected our five most expensive neighborhoods from all 49 census tracts and found where the best and worst deals are.
The most expensive home in the country is in the Atlanta suburb of DeKalb/Marietta.
We also ranked the two most expensive suburbs from each of the 50 metro areas that are most populous and the 5 largest in metropolitan Atlanta in the categories of median home price and total square footage.
“These are the most competitive and expensive neighborhoods for buying a home for a single family home, but that’s not the only reason,” adds Schumacher.
“Some of the best deals come in single-family homes, especially in the suburbs. In Atlanta, the median property values are more than twice that of other areas with similar population — and prices are even higher in suburban areas,” he said.
The Atlanta suburb of DeKalb is the priciest home of the five, selling for $914,900.
The median home price there is more than twice the median house price across the entire city, according to Census data. And the median house in the metro is also significantly more expensive than the average house price in Atlanta itself.
