A group of Democratic donors recently went on a conference call with an aide to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her top lieutenants to voice their displeasure with President Donald Trump and her decision to give him a congressional waiver authorizing a controversial ban on transgender immigrants.
According to sources familiar with the call, at least two women were “unintimidated” during the call and expressed displeasure with Pelosi’s decision to issue a waiver. But some women did not want to go public with their grievances, according to the sources.
Pelosi is one of the more liberal members of the Congressional leadership team, but it is also an influential faction that has the power to wield an important influence over the president of the united states and is often viewed as a crucial vote in the upper chamber.
On Nov. 2, Pelosi met with top Democrats, including Majority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland and Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on the call, according to the sources. They discussed the recent executive order from President Donald Trump that temporarily suspended the deportation of residents of seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States.
Shortly after it was announced that Pelosi would be the first Democratic leader to oppose the ban, a group of Pelosi-aligned fundraisers and campaign operatives called to tell their “friend” that that Pelosi would be supporting the decision. These members would not identify themselves.
Pelosi and her aides tried to put words of encouragement into the mouths of the activists who were not inclined to speak up. One source said the women also shared a similar message.
Two other sources were briefed earlier on the call by a staffer who was on the call, saying that the members who were on the call were in agreement with Pelosi’s decision.
Although the members on the call have not spoken publicly, sources on the call said they were very upset with the decision.
According to the sources who were briefed on the call, some complained on the call that Pelosi was “shameless” for issuing the waiver. They said, “she’s being sneaky and this is an easy way to get an immigration ban passed.”
When the members on the call were told that Pelosi would be speaking out again on the topic when Hoyer spoke to the press on Nov. 17, some people on the call were disappointed, according to the sources.
