The University of Michigan is investigating a video that appears to show a University of Michigan Police Officer pointing a loaded gun at a person on the campus.
The video was reportedly shot earlier this week by a student on campus.
According to K-State University, police responded to two separate incidents for which “their officers were armed in the first place.”
The first incident involved an ongoing disturbance in Houghton Hall. As the video shows, police are telling a student to sit down and give up the room. The student asks them to wait until he is escorted toward the office so they can take him to a safe place.
According to the student, a second officer came and spoke with the person. The student says he was taken to a safe area where an unknown number of police were waiting for him.
K-Stress said a spokesperson for the university has confirmed the video in question does not capture any incidents like these and that University Police have not been involved in any incidents in Houghton Hall.
According to an email obtained by TPM, the college requires all students to be present at school as security is an important part of their security.
As a University of Michigan student and former police officer, I’m deeply troubled by this incident. On a recent walk through campus, I heard my campus officers on the other end of the campus yelling at people to leave the areas because police officers were “alarmed” and wanted to “take their guns away,” to which students responded “they’re not taking their guns away.” I was extremely shocked to hear this over a walk through the university. I was in a class with students and a police officer in a class (the professor was also a police officer) and after the class ended, the police officer asked me “how can I help with the crowd?” I informed the officer that my class was no longer in session, and asked what the issue was. The officer replied that people were getting out of control and wanted to stop the situation.
