The U.S. government spends millions of dollars annually on an army of private security contractors, including two major law enforcement agencies who, according to the Department of Justice, are the most dangerous in the country.
In 2014, there were more than 40,000 police agencies employing private security agents, but the Department of Justice recently reported that their numbers were down. In 2015, that number was down by 20 percent, according to a report recently released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The report found that the average FBI employee only received about 9,000 hours of paid work over a four-year span in 2014. That amount is the lowest in the bureau’s history. This month, FBI Director James Comey acknowledged the decline and said police officers may need to “re-examine how much and why they are going to spend time out on the street.”
