Funny thing. In some of the interviews I had been doing at the time, they were talking about graffiti. It wasn’t about it being about art. I was like, “What the fuck is this? Why would you do that?” I wanted to know what was going on. At this point, I still didn’t have any clue.
Some of the artists you read about in graffiti magazines use different techniques than what I do. A lot of them used the traditional techniques of spray cans, and I kind of understood the technical aspect. My only point of interest was the fact that it seemed like nobody had done it that way before me. So I went to see if anybody was doing that. I went to the next artist on the block, and I told him, “Hey. This isn’t the next one, but let’s talk about it.” He was like, “Let’s go.” I said, “Okay.” And in that conversation, I found out the secret.
I said, “Hey. I didn’t say that. What you do is a lot different than what I do—at least for me.” He said, “That’s how you do it.” I said, “Well then, what’s that?” And he said, “I paint you down. I paint you down the streets. I paint you down the houses at night.”
I remember the first time I did that. I had just walked to my car and it was all pretty much dark. I was sitting in the dark, looking out of the window of the car at the night sky, taking in all the sun-flowers and all the stars, and thinking, “Yeah, that’s pretty much like what I do every day.” And right up until I was sitting at the stoplight, I was like, “This is kind of hard to do.”
We got pulled over, and it didn’t take long because they pulled the car over and they got me off. The car didn’t even have a license plate back then.
I thought about that the next day and decided to see how far I could dive into my art. I had been thinking about doing a couple pieces, about a couple different subjects. In the car, I just had a bunch of pictures I had taken and a little sketchbook with some words in it that weren’t that interesting to me. In the car, there weren’t any notes. There were a couple of pages in there of words, but I didn’t make those words
