There are a lot of different kinds of dance that can be helpful, but there are a few that I personally think are especially effective for treating some of the more difficult conditions we’re facing as a society. I’m talking here about dances such as salsa, hip hop, and house. These dances will not only help make you feel good physically, but they will increase your mental health in a lot of other ways, too.
Dance helps you mentally…
A great deal of research has been done in the field of mental health to investigate how many of the issues we face as a nation are down to the emotional aspects of our lifestyle. While we don’t talk much about mental health as a physical ailment of the mind, the studies that have been done in the past have shown that dancing can have an impact on the way a person feels mentally.
According to a 2006 study published in Psychology of Popular Music, dancing and meditation are more common causes of increased anxiety than any other factor.
Additionally, people who are prone to depression usually dance because it can make them feel better. This suggests that dancing can help with depression as well.
And not just when dancing and meditation are involved. Research shows that dance and meditation increase your concentration and ability to focus — things that can make a big difference between an “all the rage” person vs. a introverted workaholic.
For some other evidence, see a study which found that dancers tend to be happier than their non-dancing mates. A study which found that dancing is related to lower levels of stress in a person’s life.
Dance can improve your health
For me dancing is a great way not only to feel better emotionally, but also boost my mental health.
In a 2010 research paper, researchers examined the relationship between dance and the immune system and found that it was one of the main factors linking dance to physical health. As you may have guessed, this is not good news since it suggests that dance (or simply your dancing) has strong correlations with mental health.
One study which looked at physical health found that after 10 weeks of going to a dance club all participants’ blood pressure stayed low while their levels of the inflammation marker CRP were significantly improved.
So dancing might be good for your physical health, but at the same time it’s one of the best ways to boost your mental health too.
