Saffron is considered an aphrodisiac, and this has led to reports of severe allergic reactions and serious skin reactions. Serious skin reactions are rare because of saffron’s strong odor (sulfur) in the form of cinnamon. But it is not completely clear how the skin reacts after eating saffron, although it has been shown that eating cinnamon is associated with a high risk of a condition called “leuchten” (the red skin inflammation, or lupus-like disease). Some research is indicating that eating cinnamon during pregnancy may have a significant effects on fetal development—this is not well verified yet.
What should parents know about saffron in particular?
As with any food that is raw, there is a risk of contamination by microbes. In addition, saffron is not a food you should consume directly from the plant. Rather, it should be cooked in a clean saucepan. If the saffron leaves are not allowed inside your refrigerator in your food preparation, they can get into the food you cook and become an unwanted source of foodborne illness.
What other precautions should parents know?
Consumers are advised to take all necessary precautions including avoiding direct contact with the stalks of saffron, using separate containers for raw and cooked saffron, washing saffron leaves with water, and washing cut leaves by hand in well-ventilated areas.
If your child has specific food allergies, such as egg, soy or dairy, you may want to discuss these allergies at a visit with your pediatrician, a naturopath, or a veterinarian.
