Yes. It depends on the type. In general, any type of rice will be a good growing medium for saffron. Saffron seeds can be stored for between one and 10 years when properly stored in a cool location (e.g. in a cool dry place). The seeds can be dried and reused.

Saffron is an herbaceous type of plant, so will benefit from being grown in the right place. If grown outside, saffron is best suited to warm weather areas, although sesame seeds can be made to grow at temperatures as cool as –4°C.

Saffron seed growing

To grow saffron, sown sown sown. Don’t sow seeds too early, unless you are making saffron-infused tea!

Once sown, sown, sow more. It is essential to keep sowing. The sowing will help prevent weeds and provide your seedlings with water and food that would otherwise be lost in the wild.

There are three stages in sowing:

1. Set Sown Seeds

Fill up a pot with sifted sand from a pond, a field or somewhere, that has abundant sifted sand. Fill it all the way to the rim. Place the pot on a flat surface. Gently shake the sand to dislodge any seeds; you should notice the small white bits of sand that don’t look very good. Once the seeds are loose enough to handle, sift more sand. This next step may take a couple of hours in the heat of summer, and you may have to take the pot off the heat for few minutes when you want to take the seeds off the sand. If you don’t sift sand before sowing the seeds, some seeds will fall apart.

2. Gather Up Seeds

Seed collection is often done between the first and second week of May (as in my blog post on growing saffron). You should sift, and gather, seeds up to the rim of the plant.

3. Sieve Sifted Seeds

As soon as you have collected seeds, lay them out on a cloth or paper towel and let them dry out thoroughly. You can also try soaking them in water, then rubbing them with the sieved seed.

Seed collecting is essential for sifting out seeds that don’t adhere
