I’ll get you started. The first step is to learn the basics of cultivating and harvesting a small amount of saffron.
To grow saffron, you’ll need some basic tools and equipment to work with, such as a small container to hold it in and a watering can to bring water to your plant (a good saffron pot can accommodate about 4 – 5 cups of water). It doesn’t hurt to have some saffron in your kitchen, so you can start off with about 3-4 cups of saffron.
When you’re done, you’ll have a few jars of saffron — and, to keep it from rotting overnight, you’ll want to store it in a plastic bag in your fridge to keep it fresh. It should be available in the United States — and if you’re not sure, look for it in the grocery catalogs. A jar will last a couple of months at room temperature.
How do you know if your saffron is good quality?
The first step is to observe the plant. Do it for yourself. If the plant seems healthy, you’re set. Otherwise, it might have some little odd spots or warts on it where it hasn’t grown for a while.
Once you’ve identified the spots or warts, take a closer look. Most of the time, you’ll notice tiny, white warts on the stems and other parts of the plant, which are the saffron’s “buds.” Sometimes the warts will be larger or longer, which indicates that the plant will start producing saffron as soon as you do the first step. You don’t need to worry about losing your saffron just because it looks dirty. If you get the saffron to look good for a few more days, the plants will be ripe enough to grow a new saffron-producing part of the plant each year in preparation for next year.
Some people say you can buy a nice plastic saffron container, buy a saffron pot, and start growing saffron out of it just like a garden. I don’t really think you should do this, because after the plant is done growing it, you’ll start to get all sorts of weird little pieces of plastic sticking to the top of the plant’s leaves. You might even find that the plants themselves will get mold and moldy — a big concern for me, because I like my plants to have a little natural
