Saffron has a reputation for flavor preservation. It isn’t something you’re likely to notice when wearing saffron silk, especially if you are in the middle of dinner or if you are going to eat it as a dessert. However, it does have a taste that’s worth noting. Traditionally you won’t find saffron used to flavor dishes where it is used for its color and hue—most often used in the form of a dessert color. The flavor is subtle, just like most other saffron’s. But, like other spices in the world, it can impart a certain complexity to dishes.
Saffron is said to be the spice of the gods because of the magical properties it has that make it an excellent spice to impart flavor throughout the kitchen. It works wonders on a meal where a spice-like taste is being added in small amounts to enhance the taste of something or serve as a contrast. Some dishes even use saffron to emphasize the rich flavors of food such as pork and lamb.
The main characteristic the spice is known for is its flavor enhancing effect. As with most spices, saffron has no real odor. Its flavor is only associated with the color of saffron which adds flavor in the food.
For instance, if you want to add a hint of spice to a dish, saffron’s main characteristic is its brightness and smell, which is often found in spices. A spice scent is often linked with the scent of honey, which is often used as a complementary fragrance to enhance flavor.
What do saffron flakes taste like?
Saffron flakes are edible, but not edible in a way that I would enjoy—you might get it in a salad or cooked at a low heat for a few minutes and the flavor would be lost on your plate, but it might bring a sweet flavor to the end of the meal. However, there is an exception to the rule and that is saffron powder.
As I said, the flavor of saffron flakes is not like what you usually associate with saffron so it isn’t something I usually eat. However, you can get it as a dessert flavor. You can find the recipe in a restaurant or a grocery store. It is a very versatile spice that can be used in virtually any type of cuisine.
