I’ve talked to a couple of people on both the forum and in person and they agree, but they have one thing in common; they want to get to a position where they can afford to pay skilled workers more than the cost of hiring non-skilled ones. I have one point to make about how this situation seems to be getting worse for the average person. You’re not getting any smarter. What’s the point in having a very good education unless you can find or create a job for yourself as an engineer or engineer’s apprentice? You should be able to get a good job. There are plenty of other ways to get ahead such as studying for a diploma. I’m not advocating making the “good job” standard a thing of the past. But people should be making an honest effort to make a good job first, then take up apprenticeships if they have the skill for it. So what are we looking for when we start looking at the college education system? What are the key skills? As we’ve learned, the answers are not “qualifications for being a professional.” You need to be someone who is looking to get into a job, who is looking for a job. In many of the countries like China, India, and many of the developing countries, if you’re not looking for work you’re not going to be able to get a job. One of our goals in education will be to raise the standards of entry into the profession by making universities and colleges more competitive and giving students the opportunity to find work. One of the reasons some of those countries that are still in an education bubble are not moving ahead in leaps and bounds is that they don’t have a system that enables people to get into jobs without putting in the hard work required. Many things have to be done to make this happen. The key, of course, is education. And we are working on that.

How do you compare being born into a wealthy family to being born into a poor family? I think people often mistake “how you got here” for “why people are in education.” I think the vast majority of people have had a lot of good luck. If you’re born into an upper-middle-class family in America, you’re probably going to end up somewhere. If you’re born into a low-middle-class family, if you’re lucky, then you might go to school a little, get a few degrees, a few internships at some kind of business or government employer which could be a few decades out from now
