How do beginners learn to paint? – Teach Yourself Art

There are a number of ways to learn paint, each having their own benefits and tradeoffs – I’ll share my main takeaways here, but please also join our Facebook group, and our forum to share experiences and get inspired!

There are many other ways to learn painting besides this, such as:

Most of us won’t know the first thing about painting from watching an online tutorial.

Self-guided painting classes/informational video series – There are lots of painting books, videos, and other creative art media that are great to experience first-hand – such as these self-guided painting classes.

Self-help/information resources – if you want to learn to paint by yourself, online resources are the way to go. I suggest checking out the Art by Numbers website and the Art by Art website.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t recommend either type of online painting instruction. For beginners, the self-guided method is a great option. It doesn’t take long to learn a little and then to progress to a more advanced phase. In the meantime, don’t take the word of a blog – it might be right, but the art may not be.

In the meantime, here are some tips for beginners:

Try painting in groups – the more paint you get, the bigger the palette and the easier you’ll find it. If you get a group of four to five people to paint with, it can seem quite intimidating.
