So, what’s the solution to this mess? It’s simple …
Focus on the Future
It’s important to make sure that any change you make in a system or culture doesn’t be permanent. That means it’s not enough for you to make changes and immediately expect to see improvement in those changes. You need to make it a yearly ritual of change.
Why is that important? Every year, every athlete in every program needs to make certain changes in their body or mindset. If you’re trying to become a better professional athlete, you need to make a change in body composition, an improvement in diet, a change in training, etc. All of those need to be done each year without question. It’s better to make things a part of a routine that you can maintain from year-to-year than say, you need to change EVERY year of your career. If something is not part of your routine, change it.
So, the question now is … what if it’s important to change your entire program and routine? What if that was your dream for your next year at the college level and you were not only willing to implement it, but enthusiastic about implementing it? What if what you wanted was to improve in every aspect of what you do?
If you have a dream of becoming a better sports person, you need to be willing to change things in your program to better meet your vision. If you’re not being productive every single day (and you are), you need to start making some changes. That doesn’t mean you have to make every change in every aspect of your programs. That means you have to make sure that your programs meet your exact needs for improvement. That’s not ideal. It’s not even realistic – it’s impossible. A new goal is a great start and you’ll feel better when you achieve it.
Let’s say you want to improve in your lifts. You’re going to get better at those lifts every single day. Why? Because you have a plan. A strategy. Your best chance for a better day at the rack is to build that plan and stay the course towards your goal. If you have a bad plan in your program, it’s far more likely that your athletes are performing better than they are supposed to for a wide variety of reasons.
