The man who was arrested yesterday in a standoff with police near downtown Phoenix, Arizona — reportedly on charges of killing a man and wounding another man with a hammer — was an FBI informant, and is apparently a threat to other undercover investigations.
Michael “Michael” Steven Smith, 34, was a special agent in the Phoenix office of the FBI’s Phoenix Field Office, where he reportedly used to be a confidential informant for the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives from 2014 to 2015, the New York Times reports.
In 2015, the New Yorker, following Smith’s arrest in an Arizona police shooting, identified Smith as an “informant” in that instance and said a person named “Sean Smith” had been killed after being allegedly “robbed at gunpoint by an informant in a Phoenix Police Department undercover operation.”
Smith has been named a threat to investigations since he was arrested. Phoenix police say they are investigating an arson in Arizona on Christmas Day, which apparently caused $15,000 worth of damage, in which a man allegedly shot a friend in the head with the hammer of a hammer.
After his arrest for the shooting in Arizona, Smith has been placed on a five year hold, and is required to post $500,000 bail in the Arizona case before being set free, if convicted. He is due in court later this month.
Phoenix officers have said Smith was wearing a mask during his arrest. At Wednesday night’s news conference Smith wore a mask, but he said the mask “had something” that made him look like Michael Myers, a horror movie franchise character.
Smith’s attorney, Alan Shifler, later said that a witness saw Smith with a gun and he said he suspects Smith is an informant. He said his client’s actions were justified against a suspect posing a threat to the community.
