“You have the opportunity to share a lot of knowledge and give advice. It also provides an opportunity to say ‘yes, this is what I need to do to get my job done’ and to do something about it. I think the most important aspect is the experience, of being able to share it with friends, be able to share it with people who can learn from it, to have somebody who wants to be in your life.”

As well as his football coaching role, the pair is often involved in a number of projects, including providing guidance on the career development opportunities available to ex-players. “I’ve seen so many people who started in their careers in football, now they’re looking at running a business,” Jones says.

With the rise of academies in England and youth football in particular, there’s more emphasis put on coaching and supporting players. Even the likes of Jamie Vardy have been brought up within the structures set up to nurture talent, with the 25-year-old England winger recently speaking out about the impact of the Under 22s academy in developing young talent. It’s a significant and positive change at the grassroots level, but the clubs and the FA have to be prepared to make sure they have the right personnel to fulfil their potential.

“The more they are able to understand that you can put someone in front of the ball and take it up the field and then create your goalscoring opportunity, the better the players will be over time,” Williams says. This is something that must be achieved in English football. “What I see now is that young players in England are being nurtured and developed by an academy system, which I don’t think we’re getting back to where we used to be…
