Which are the most likely to come up in practice and which are the most likely to disappear when you’re in the heat of the game?
BJ: I see coach/player interaction being very important here. I see them working together, working up a sweat and going to practice. There is a lot more energy on the court and it makes all players feel like they’re playing on a much larger scale, which is usually how some players are treated on a daily basis (I’m talking about high school and college players). A lot of player interaction comes from when guys go for a full court press, for example.
I see it a lot in small-ball teams, where teams often have 1-2 guys, who are there to be the guy on defense and the guy on offense (or vice versa). Sometimes in big-ball teams guys would go between the center and the wing (maybe with the point guard) depending on what’s happening on the court when we play. So it becomes a lot more about what the coach and the players want to do: do you want to play like that, or do you want to move onto other things? It often becomes a matter of preference rather than a question of “do I want to be on this or against this?”
I’m not going to get stuck in the details when it comes to why these coaches were successful or failed. I have been very lucky. One of the things I noticed when I was going back and studying coach’s work was how many of our teams started out in the same situation by the beginning of the season. We didn’t have the best shooting, our bench was very young and we had a lot of depth – but we’d found a way to win. This may, in part, be because we knew we couldn’t lose. It was a learning experience for them to realize that when the games were tight, the games were going to be close and it was going to be important for them to win. It’s also a way of teaching those players that it’s not only about winning – it’s also about making other people better, which is something that’s critical for a young center.
BK: What are the lessons you learned in your time in L.A.?
BJ: My experience there was definitely a learning experience for me, and I believe that it will be for future players at both the minor and major levels. If you’re going to have young, skilled players – it helps to start them early
