Here are a few ways to measure your coach’s success and how much you enjoy the coach’s time with you.
Competence
The more successful you are in your coaching role, the more you will attract the coaching you enjoy the most (which is generally the highest quality of work that you can expect). However, if you do not enjoy coaching at all, you should move on in the long-term.
If coach effectiveness is the highest, then you should have an extremely high level of interest in coaching, and a desire to improve. If coach effectiveness is the lowest, you should not enjoy learning about coaching, and a desire to quit coaching altogether or go back to teaching in your native language.
If you are not satisfied with your coach’s effectiveness but have a positive opinion about coach-to-coach communication, then you have a high chance of becoming better at coaching without getting paid by the coach. However, if you simply enjoy coaching more than you enjoy teaching, then you should quit coaching altogether or move on to coaching in your native language again.
Teaching
Teaching is a job that demands a lot of time and effort from you. However, if you enjoy teaching, then you should enjoy spending time with your students so that they can be as productive as possible on their own.
Your best chance for success in coaching when you are a teacher comes when you teach in a context that you are comfortable in, so that you are motivated to deliver high quality products even when you are struggling.
If at first you are happy being the principal of the school, then you do not have much chance in coaching and should move on in the future. If you are uncomfortable coaching, then you also have a low chance of succeeding in coaching.
If you cannot help but want to coach, then you will be in a really good position, even with a low level of performance.
However, if you are not sure that you are better prepared for coaching than an English teacher, then this is not a good sign. It’s also not a good sign if your teacher cannot understand you.
The bottom line is that the more successful you are as a coach, the more you will be able to attract the coaches you enjoy the most. If your coach is not successful, then you should move on.
