The World Series of Fighting (WSOF) is moving beyond just the promotion’s debut in Las Vegas in 2017. As a recent press release states:
The UFC, WSOF and the Nevada Athletic Commission have agreed to a new three-year licensing agreement to give both parties access to a world-renowned MMA world-class event in the Mile High City in 2016.
The press release also stated that the contract will also include “expanded marketing and digital opportunities.”
The UFC (which will not have a presence after WSOF’s departure in December) and WSOF (which will stay the course as a nonprofit non-profit organization) will operate the event while UFC, LLC retains rights to the event.
The announcement was made on Thursday, October 24, by WSOF CEO Bjorn Rebney and state Senator Tick Segerblom (D-Las Vegas), along with state Senator and gubernatorial candidate Brian Wilson; former UFC and WSOF executive vice president Josh Koscheck; and UFC executive John Danaher.
As mentioned before for the WSOF’s move to the UFC, the original UFC partnership lasted until 2015 and saw the promotion split into two different promotion organizations with the WSOF becoming their national promotion.
WSOF will remain an independent organization with its head honcho, Bjorn Rebney, serving in an advisory role to both the UFC and WSOF. Rebney, who was not on board with WSOF when it was started, will not have a direct role in the promotion’s operations once it is officially a combined venture.
WSOF will also retain their current MMA broadcast deal with FOX Sports 1, which has carried a welterweight title fight every year since 2011, but WSOF is asking for $3.75 million per fight to pay the UFC for UFC 182, which is scheduled for November 16, 2015, as expected. The fight purse is a significant hike from the $250,000 the WSOF is asking for a main event in their first ever event in Nevada.
The announcement stated that WSOF is seeking an average television rating of 1.7 million for the event.
