It’s actually the same with every instrument and its sound, but you have to pay more attention to it. There’s no magic wand that you have to buy to play the violin or any other instrument! I always find you have to understand it’s sound and what you like, what works in your style and what isn’t really there.
What’s your advice to musicians who wish to get into violin?
There are a lot of good things about the violin, just like there are a lot of things that make a great bass or a great saxophone or a great guitar or a great drum. Just as violin is a great instrument for many people, it’s a great instrument to be able to get good with and learn how to use the right way. That’s what I recommend.
Where can musicians and people with disabilities find great education?
There’s a lot of interesting resources in the world for people who are interested in learning, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. I think in the back of your mind, it can be good to just make your way around and learn for yourself.
Do you still get nervous playing with people with disabilities?
I’ll be honest with you, but I never had any nerves while playing with people with disabilities, because it’s just me, playing. The only time when your nerves gets to you is if you’re really going to make a mistake, in which case it hurts. But you have to be able to play if you want to play. If you’re not happy, just quit at that point.
What instrument do you play most often?
The violin is my favorite instrument, I love playing it. But if I have to do something new, I’m always playing the banjo. It’s a lot of fun and has a lot of power, and there’s something very satisfying about playing it.
