Young people should begin lessons two to three years ago because they have limited motor skills or they are developing their skills very slowly or they need to practise lots and lots of things. They should practise when they have the time because it will help them develop the muscle movements that they need to play the piano. If they are new to the piano and they want to do it at home they could start at six years old
What do I need to bring?
Any piano that you are allowed to play (usually you can only take the right one, but you can use any one that a student tells you about!)
Any earphones
A pencil or a pen to help you mark off notes
A sheet of paper or a computer mouse so you write out all the note on paper
A few small pencils so you can mark the notes on the piano
A pair of headphones or a good quality pair of earphones
Do I need to do this for all my lessons?
Yes you need to do it all for an all-round piano (it doesn’t matter if you have a beginner or a great beginner who wants to learn the piano!)
I am not interested in piano lessons, what can I do now?
It depends, I will give you some tips to help you decide if your interest is still there. To make the decision easier, I will give you two questions for each kind of piano I teach you. One of them will ask you to rank all the pianos in the orchestra section. If the one that you have most enjoyed listening to doesn’t suit you or if you don’t like it then you will be free to choose a different keyboard.
1. Is the piano good – and comfortable to listen to?
There has to be a comfortable sound for me to play it. If I feel that it doesn’t sound good I can say to you: “I think it will be a pleasure to play something else”. If I am not completely satisfied then I will have to remove it from my teaching inventory.
I am not interested in piano lessons, what can I do now?
If the piano sounds bad and/or is not comfortable to listen to then we need to look at other options. One of them might be that you should play it just one time but when I listen to it I will say: “I think you don’t have to play it that way. This is where you will find the joy of
