The average violinist starts off with less than two weeks of professional training – however if you’re the size of a mouse, you might well be performing in a solo event three in the morning. If you’re not as lucky, it might take you a couple of years.
How is the experience for a violinist?
First, a violinist is the absolute worst. They may have been playing for 25, 30 or 50 years, they have been professionally trained in many instruments throughout their life and are more than fully aware of the risks and pitfalls. The best violinists are highly intelligent, extremely disciplined, passionate and very professional.
It’s also important to realise that you are more than just your performance equipment. The skills you’ve mastered on your own also apply hugely to others outside of the rehearsal space (and also in rehearsals if required). It’s the same with musicians, teachers and other professionals. As one violinist said: “A violinist should never work alone because he or she cannot learn the technique of a virtuoso.”
There are different kinds of training available to students – classical and professional. However the classical training is expensive and many students opt for more affordable professional training at professional schools.
What is the best way of acquiring a new instrument?
We want all the students of our schools to have the time, money and energy that is needed to take on an instrument and become an extremely successful violinist.
Every year, we look at what students need and choose to develop our repertoire based on what we learn, what’s useful and how to make the most of that. We have a large number of instruments, so if your instrument is out of production, there is only so far we can go to develop it.
You can make yourself more accessible to potential students by buying your own instrument (for example, a Guaragnino violin), as we can provide you with the basics and then help you develop your repertoire as part of our learning system. Or, in other cases if your instrument is no longer commercially manufactured, you may be able to find a way to develop that skillset by learning to tune a new instrument.
If you’re looking for a specific piece of music that you want to learn how to play, you can make yourself available to students who are interested, but that takes time and commitment.
