What if a toddler has a bad game of hide-and-seek? What if a 2 year old likes to collect crayons? What if a 4 year old plays checkers? I had a little kid who would run and jump around, and my husband’s friend was on the phone with the social worker. That was the last time I would ever believe that the child would play a real instrument. But, I believe that’s what’s happening. I’m not sure who does it or how, but they’re doing it. There’s something there, something deep and complex. It’s something that I can’t understand. It’s not like a child playing the piano – the way they play is so subtle, and they sound like someone playing an old timey keyboard. But, some of them have it, and some don’t. I’m thinking about this for him, but I don’t ever want to be so sure, so I’m going on record to say that for me this is an important question and a real question. How do we create an environment that makes us comfortable with the idea of a child wanting to play a real instrument? And what does that mean for parents and educators?

My daughter is learning to play the guitar – something I used to say was an adult interest. But she is really interested in it.
