For the first time ever, researchers report on a large-scale study that demonstrates that a single dose of the antidepressant fluoxetine was effective for the treatment of depression and suicidal thoughts in children (ages 3 to 18).
The investigators found that up to 98 percent of depressed parents were prescribed fluoxetine for their child, while children were treated with no fluoxetine, a new study shows.
“We now have data to show that depression and suicidality are closely related,” said lead investigator Dr. Eric L. Gershman, a research professor in psychiatry at the Columbia University Medical Center.
“This study provides a strong argument to move beyond the single dose for treating children,” said Dr. Andrew Freedman, chief of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, who was not involved in the study. “Many factors must be considered in terms of how a single dose of fluoxetine can be a potent treatment.”
Fluoxetine is a prescription drug that is effective for depression. It was first developed 30 years ago.
Previous studies have shown that up to 97 percent of depressed parents were prescribed fluoxetine for their child, according to Dr. Freedman’s study.
Depression is a common problem among children. It occurs in nearly 80 percent to 95 percent of depressed people, compared with only 23 percent to 28 percent of adults, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“The findings of this study lend strong support to the practice of using one dose of fluoxetine for treating depression in children,” said Dr. Daniel H. Siegel, director of the Center for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at New York State Psychiatric Institute and a clinical professor in the department of psychiatry at Brandeis University’s School of Medicine.
Suicide is a major public health problem among children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are about 50,000 suicides each year in children ages 0 to 14.
According to previous research, fluoxetine may reduce suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children. According to a 2009 study, patients who received a single dose of fluoxetine experienced fewer symptoms of acute mood or psychotic symptoms during the first year after treatment compared with those who received a placebo.
The study was conducted in 15 countries. In the United States, Gers
