So Google’s revenue from Play videos for Google Play Music was around $0.00 per 1000 streams for the year. It pays about $0.14 for video ads and $0.09 for music. That makes Google’s YouTube partner pay Google just $0.01 per 1000 streams.
One might see this as something “wrong” with Play Music, but the truth is different. Play Music is basically Spotify, except with more free content.
So it’s a fair comparison between the two.
Here’s another example that should make Play Music owners happy: Spotify paid $0.01 for streaming ad revenues in Q4 2014, and in Q4 2015, the same.
That means that between 2014 and 2015, Play Music paid around $0.01 per 1000 streams to the Google music partner. By contrast, there’s virtually no cost difference for Google’s own Google Play Music, which is a good thing, given that Google now wants to pay royalties to everyone that downloads music.
So how much do ads pay? The following table shows the number of ads per 1000 streams.
The number in parenthesis is the ad rate, and the numbers in brackets are the Google partners, according to this page.

Here’s another example: Google paid $0.25 for Google Play music streaming ads per 1000 videos. It’s worth noting that the last half of 2013 and first half of 2014 (as well as 2014) saw significant drop in video advertising revenue that made Play Music appear somewhat weak. However, since 2015, video advertising income has almost been completely regained, which means that Play Music is actually seeing more revenue per 1000 streams.
You can see that it’s not quite as fast as people expect, but with the current model and the rate of video consumption (especially on mobile devices), Play Music should be able to regain a lot of this lost ad revenue very quickly.
