There are several ways, but the one we preferred was the Google Music method. We set up our account, created our profile, and got started. However, when you’re using this method, you have to enter in a special YouTube URL that only works if you’ve created an account. Luckily for us, the YouTube URL can always be found in the “My Account” page under the Settings menu. In “My Account,” go to “YouTube.”
Now open the YouTube page to launch the YouTube Music app. From there, just follow the on-screen directions to create a profile, pick your own music, play, listen to and choose tracks for your playlist. Be sure to pick “All Tracks” to get all the music you’ll listen to. We’ve found that the Music app’s “Search” feature also works to record your own music.

There are also a variety of ways to find the songs you’ve recorded. For instance, if you’re listening on your phone as you’re playing the YouTube video, YouTube will suggest you play a song on the phone that sounds popular or is similar to something you’ve recorded. You’ll then hear that song through the Google Music App and the video, but the recording won’t be the same song.
Finally, if you’ve added music to your playlist from your browser, it will be able to play as much of your stored recordings as you want. From all available music sources, however, only YouTube Music will be able to play your favorites.
What if I don’t have a Google Play Music account? The way you can record music while playing YouTube is entirely different from the way you can do the same in Android phones. You can’t log in as a Google Play Music user nor can you use a personal assistant (like S Voice, Alexa, etc.). You can only record music from your Google Account or music downloaded directly from that service. Google will let you record music while watching YouTube videos or while in a playlist on your Chromebook.
This also means that if you record a bunch of songs and want to upload them to YouTube, you’ll have to do that on your Chromebook before they can be played on YouTube. It has nothing to do with the way you use YouTube, it’s just the way it works.
