The new dwarf star, dubbed GGC 1149 B, was found by astronomers led by Dr. Andrew G. Miller, with input from colleagues at the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin). The findings are published in the journal Nature.
GGC 1149 B is one of a series of dwarf stars discovered within 40 light-years of each other by Dr. Miller’s team. They all fit within our galaxy’s habitable zone – a zone that is thought to be around around three times the size of what scientists see around Earth.
Their discovery has caused a lot of panic among the scientists involved, as they were initially concerned the stellar ‘supernova’ they discovered was an early example of a black hole event, one that has happened hundreds of times more extensively in our galaxy
