David Cameron’s announcement that he will step down as PM at the next general election has prompted an immediate flurry of public handbags – particularly men.
The number of packages handed to men dropped from 1,079 in 2013/14 to 996 in 2014/15 while women’s packages dropped from 4,902 to 3,931.
It follows a change made by the government’s “gender equality budget” in 2011 that saw the reduction of £15m in government spending on public sector jobs for women.
The amount handed to each gender has remained steady since then.
In 2014/15 women’s packages were worth £766,000 – or £6.4m less than 2012/13, according to data from the Department for Work and Pensions. The number of men’s packages was worth £1.1m – or £1.1m less in 2015/16.
Men made up 41% of all packages in 2014/15, compared to 48% in 2012/13.

Some men have taken that to mean they had been overlooked in the cuts.
David Cameron’s former advisor, John Mills, said it was not a good look.
“That is not true, David. Those of us in the media will always look at that and say, ‘Oh we got lucky’. We do that for David,” he told Radio 4’s Today programme.
“But this is not a trend of people being left behind.”
‘Not bad’
On a separate question, Mr Mills said that while the UK’s budget for gender equality had fallen, that spending had not been as significantly reduced as people might think.
“But it is still a drop – it is not like we are having a gender wage gap or something is going on which is stopping men from getting a job and women from getting a job,” he said.
