First, stand in a comfortable position, place your hands on your hips. Inhale and move your body forward. Exhale slightly and turn your upper body 90 degrees to that initial position. Inhale some more, and come back to stand in your natural position, with your hands resting on your hips.

This technique of using your breath as a tool rather than a source of resistance is a useful one in many sports. Athletes in particular can use their breath as a means to increase range, speed, agility and strength. This technique is particularly applicable to runners, as they cannot often use their legs. We’ll discuss breath in greater detail in the next step.

Athletes can use their breath to speed their legs or to jump higher or higher through the air.

I have been fascinated with breath for a very long time. I have been a competitive runner for more than 30 years. I often ask people what they thought could be improved upon in my style. The response is usually either more lung power from lung muscles, increasing running speed, longer distances or more distance covered.

A common suggestion is to be more active and to hold the breath more often. I have tried this idea from several angles. Many of my friends, athletes and other professionals have also attempted the same things by inhaling more and holding the breath more often.

One such exercise can be performed by putting a few teaspoons of the recommended sugar in your mouth and then releasing some air into the space between your teeth between each swallow. I have found to some success with this exercise, and it can be performed anywhere.

Another idea is to breathe faster or slower in order to improve aerodynamics of the leg. This practice involves holding the breath for a couple of minutes. You then need to let the air out again, in the order of how fast you inhaled it. I don’t recommend this technique for people with asthma or those who have breathing problems, as your breath will not reach the muscles and can cause your breathing to be faster.

I have also been a fan of the idea of having a yoga breath yoga class. I have personally been trying to learn some more complex and interesting breath exercises to help keep my breath working to its peak efficiency.

Breathing is very important not only for runners but for all sports to keep your muscles strong and ready to perform your full range of movements. The simple fact that you can use your breath to move your body creates a sense of freedom
