It takes practice, but that’s really all you need, really. We all know dance is hard. The problem is that there are many ways to practice, and they’re not always practical for the particular person I’m trying to teach.
For example, I want to teach a beginner student to dance, so I might first have him or her come to our studio and meet a few of my staff members to see what we’ve got. That will let them feel comfortable working with me, and give them a sense of what they might be getting into.
That could take up a few classes at my studio during the class week, and then the students could then meet with a few of the staff members for extra practice, to see what they have to do. But even in that case, it could take a long time to develop a proper routine.
The most common way to get practice is to teach someone a dance you like, then take them into a few classes and just observe as they do what they like.
This approach would work best for a beginner, who has the smallest amount of practice time, for instance, and an experienced choreographer who has already had a lot of practice.
But if I’m teaching someone a new dance, I want them to use it right away, which is a lot harder in comparison to taking someone into four regular lessons and observing them.
Instead, I want to give them some time and practice, and to build a pattern of practicing with them.
Another thing I recommend is to take the students into a private studio. That means teaching one or two students at a time. That will help your students to get to know the new dancer, so they can learn what to expect as well and adjust so it feels comfortable and familiar for them.
I’m lucky enough that my partner, Alex, is good at taking my classes, and so we are able to invite my classes to the gym when we are there and see our students perform.
Another option is to go with a company. That means hiring a professional to teach class. In these cases I feel that the students are more likely to give a thorough examination when it comes to learning a dance routine and feel comfortable that it’s really working.
The point is, practice. Lots of it.
How do I find a good teacher? Where do I do it?
This is a tricky one. There’s an art to learning a dance routine that I
