Nope. If you aren’t comfortable walking in front of a crowd, you can’t be a belly dancer.
Can I do belly dance if I’ve never experienced it before?
Nope, not for you. I’ve only taught belly dance for two years and I could never teach someone else what I learned.
But if you are a fat person that has enjoyed belly dancing before, I would encourage you to give it a try. It is amazing how many belly dancers are fat. For the longest time I had a number of people tell me, “I never tried belly dancing before but here, that’s what I do” or “I’ve found belly dancing to be more fun than other dances I did.”
If you do decide to give belly dancing a go, I urge you to learn the steps before engaging in the moves. A big mistake when we are first introduced to a new dance is to assume you have already gotten comfortable with it.
What skills are required to start training for belly dance?
Learning to use your arms and feet to pull in and out of the waistband will help you to begin moving. Also learning to control the head position (e.g. headstands and splits, and hip rolls) is also a crucial skill to get through the first few weeks.
Getting a belly dance partner in front of you is also a crucial step! It takes time and preparation to have a good and reliable partner that can work on your moves. The most important point to remember is that belly dance is a bodyweight sport and you have to be comfortable in front of a group to be able to execute the whole movement.
Do I need to train my mind too?
Absolutely yes. You need to get comfortable with the basic moves and get your body moving properly. Bodyweight moves in particular require you to be aware of your body’s movements throughout your body, which isn’t a part of belly dance movement.
Belly dance is a style where you are only required to learn one dance movement (the waist dance) and it’s important to learn what is used and what isn’t. We can’t go through a full dance without learning and refining basic moves.
Is belly dancing dangerous?
It’s a very safe way to exercise because the head position is completely dependent on your physical condition, which in turn depends completely on the muscles, tendons, nerve channels and veins of your neck. It’s also extremely safe.
