The answer to that question is a resounding, “no.” This is not to say that belly dancing does not cause you pain, but the amount of stress that belly dancing puts on the body is much less than being on the gym. In my recent article, I explain that the majority of stress in the stomach area is actually carried down by stress in the back and leg muscles, causing a lot of hip stress.
Also, the way belly dancing does damage the skin of fat cells is not necessarily the same as other exercise methods. Since belly dancing involves sitting on a stomach, it is similar to yoga classes or other traditional fitness methods. The skin of fat cells is not the same as regular exercise at all, and it’s best to avoid belly dancing at home.
Should You Avoid Belly Dancing Outside?
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to that question, because belly dancing poses some severe health risks. It is important to discuss these risks with your doctor, so that you can be certain that it is not healthy for your health.
First, it’s important to make sure that this is a risk for you and not someone else: When you eat, any food that is broken down into simple molecules, such as fat or sugar, undergoes biological degradation. Therefore, there are bacteria living in your gut that are breaking down your food, so bacteria in your gut that live in your belly are breaking down your fat cells before it goes into your intestine. If you perform belly dancing, you are essentially throwing away bacteria that are present and in your fat cells themselves.
Second, it is also important to realize that, unless you have an illness that is really causing your belly to burn up, it is probably okay to perform belly dancing if you are not particularly hungry. In fact, belly dancing usually makes hunger go away faster than any other exercise. In other words, belly dancing is much less likely to cause any type of constipation.
Lastly, because belly dancing poses such a significant risk of burnout, it is a good idea to take time, before you begin belly dancing, to really consider how you feel about yourself and what you hope to accomplish. It is not the way that you are supposed to behave. Being belly dancers is not a great way to be yourself.
